Mirzapur Season 3: A Brutal Return to Purvanchal

Mirzapur has been one of the defining Indian web series of the OTT era — raw, violent, and unflinchingly honest about the power corridors of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Season 3 picks up right where the blood-soaked Season 2 left off, and the question everyone is asking is: can it still surprise us?

Story & Setting

The third season digs deeper into the political machinery behind the criminal empire of Mirzapur. Guddu Pandit's (Ali Fazal) thirst for revenge has now matured into something more calculated — he's not just fighting for survival, he's fighting for dominance. Meanwhile, the Tripathi family's grip on Mirzapur is shakier than ever, torn between internal betrayals and external political pressure.

What works brilliantly this season is the show's willingness to slow down and let characters breathe. The writing team has clearly listened to feedback about Season 2 feeling rushed in places.

Performances

  • Ali Fazal delivers a career-best performance, showing remarkable range as Guddu oscillates between calculated aggression and quiet grief.
  • Pankaj Tripathi remains the soul of the show — every scene he's in crackles with menace and dark humour.
  • Shweta Tripathi and Rasika Dugal finally get the screen time they deserved, with arcs that feel genuinely independent.
  • The newer additions to the cast blend in smoothly, adding fresh energy without overshadowing the core ensemble.

Direction & Craft

The direction is confident and assured. The Mirzapur landscape — its dusty roads, crumbling havelis, and smoke-filled political offices — is rendered with an almost documentary-like attention to detail. The action sequences are choreographed with restraint; violence here feels consequential rather than gratuitous.

What Doesn't Quite Work

The season isn't without its flaws. A few subplots feel stretched, particularly the political angle in the final two episodes which veers into territory that strains credibility. Some characters are introduced and then sidelined with frustrating abruptness. The pacing in the middle episodes dips noticeably.

Final Verdict

Mirzapur Season 3 is a strong, often brilliant return to form. It doesn't revolutionise the formula, but it executes it with greater maturity and emotional intelligence than before. If you've invested in this world, the payoff is largely worth it.
